I just looked at this verse Matthew 15:11, well actually I'd been thinking about it for some time now. Ok, since I got back home today..happy? haha. Ok anyway, for real this verse didn't make sense to me before, until now. Check it out: "Not that which entereth into the mouth defileth the man; but that which proceedeth out of the mouth, this defileth the man" (ASV). So all this fuss about what foods to eat, that's besides the point. It's what comes out of your mouth (what comes out of your heart). Cuz whatever goes in, will be digested and whatever else but what comes out (I'm not talking about throw up :)), is straight from the heart. So in other words, what you say and what you think and act upon, that's what makes you unclean, or in a stronger term, "a sinner". It's actually what makes anyone Unrighteous before God. Remember God doesn't look at the outward appearance, he looks at the heart. So if what is in our hearts is not pleasing to him, then we're unrighteous and that's just something all humanity has inherited from Adam and Eve. We're all born with unclean hearts. Before anyone puts their trust in God, he was looking at what you eat, or wear, etc. He was looking at your heart, calling out to you via your heart (that's why everyone has a guilty conscious - it's God given, can't get that from evolution).
So then what? Can we eat whatever we want, drink whatever we want, dress however we want (cuz that verse is extended to our outward appearances also), etc. No. God wouldn't have told Adam and Eve to eat just the green plants that produce seed if that were the case. There has to be Moderation. haha, Now I know there's controversy brewing in some of you guys' minds. ---------- CHILL!!!
There's gotta be moderation to everything! You and I both know too much of anything can kill, literally. Now back to the verse, "Not that which entereth into the mouth defileth the man; but that which proceedeth out of the mouth, this defileth the man." Jesus obviously knew that those snitching about his disciples eating with unwashed hands, just wanted to get him say something against the Law, (but even that, Jesus asks in the previous verses that they themselves don't even follow the law). See, it was custom to first wash your hands and then eat. It is still custom now, in fact it's hygienic, and that's why God gave it as a law. But we're all humans and tend to forget. Either we've had a long day, and have so much on our minds, or we're just really hungry. Something like that, so his disciples didn't wash their hands and knowing Jesus was a man of God (and also God), they tell Jesus that his disciples aren't washing their hands.
That's when Jesus says that it's, not that which entereth into the mouth defileth the man; but that which proceedeth out of the mouth, this defileth the man. God doesn't judge you or I based on our outward partakings. But what comes out, and ultimately springs from our hearts. That's what Jesus came for, your heart, my heart. He didn't come to give a bunch of more rules, the rules he gave are just 2, summarizing the 613 rules in the Old Testament! How fresh is that!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rule 1:
Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and mind. (Note: it starts with the heart)
Rule 2:
Love your neighbor as you love yourself.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is a summary of the 613 commandments God gave to Moses to give to Israel. The Torah is God's written law, and Jesus is God's revealed Torah, think about that. People say the Torah (the Law) doesn't apply to the New Testament and to us today. It does in 2 ways; Loving God, and Loving others. What you do in life, base it on those 2 principles: Love God and Love others.
And above all these virtues, put on LOVE... Colossians 3:14
Till next time, Shalom!
Mumo.
